Reducing HD noise on NEC Versa LX, RH9

I have an old NEC Versa LX laptop with a very noise hard drive, and I'm trying to make it quieter. I have found some ideas for reducing disk noise (bottom of www DOT tuxmobil DOT org/Mobile-Guide.db/mobile-guide-p6a5s7-power-saving-techniques.html) but they don't seem to work for redhat 9 (kernal 2.4.20), and I read somewhere that noflushd doesn't work with ext3.
Any ideas would be appreciated
