Have you looked at Linux on Laptops.

If you have looked here then maybe try Knoppix and you will see if Linux works on your laptop without having to erase any partitions or create new ones, Knoppix Site or I believe even SUSE has a live CD where you don't have to partition your hdd just go to SUSE live cd this is just an evaluation disk but this will give you an idea of how Linux works on your Compaq.

Good Luck and have fun

I write these lines from my Mandrake 9.1 on my new nx9010.
I have installed with
expert noauto idebus=66

The network adapter is a natsemi. The video Radeon (only Radeon). Still I don't have audio. The battery is ok.

Suse 8.2 Try the live eval first, but the Full version, Personal Or Professional has better hardware support.
