Hi,
In order to get my wireless (centrino) working I set out to install kernel 2.6.9 on my hp zt3000 (distribution Suse 9.0, kernel 2.4.21). So, I have compiled and rebooted, but I get the blank screen after I select the new kernel in grub. I can think of a few possibilities of what went wrong, but I couldn't figure out.
1. I used gcc3.3 (contrary to advise in Readme to use 2.9.53)
2. I didn't generate a new initrd file (is it necessary?)
3. In grub, I am using the same grub options that I used for my older kernel, namely:
kernel (hd0,6)/boot/2-6-9/bzImage root=/dev/hda7 vga=0x317 splash=silent desktop hdc=ide-scsi hdclun=0 showopts
initrd (hd0,6)/boot/initrd

What can possibly be wrong? Need help.

I have the same computer and am having the exact same problem when I tried to upgrade to the 2.6.9 kernel - at least when I tried to compile it myself. I had no problems installing the debian package for the 2.6.8 kernel though, which worked alright. I'm convinced what's going on is I'm still getting some kind of conflicting modules during the menuconfig. Let me know if you figure it out...
