Unhappy Problem starting sound card on Acer Travelmate

I am completely new to Linux and have installed Mandrake 9.1 - everything is working (even got the wireless network with WEP to work!), except for the sound card.

I've been looking on the forums to try to find a solution but can't find anything. From other posts the following seems important to you out there, in order to help, so here goes:

Code:
# modprobe trident
/lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/trident.o.gz: init_module:
No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module
parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
modprobe: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/trident.o.gz
 failed
modprobe: insmod trident failed
and

Code:
# modinfo trident
filename: /lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/trident.o.gz
description: "Trident 4DWave/SiS 7018/ALi 5451 and Tvia/IGST CyberPro5050

and

Code:

Thanks shadowhunter - I've added it in, but it hasn't helped - the sound card fails even during the initial boot up sequence of Linux. I will try posting to the Mandrake group in case anyone there has any ideas. Cheers.

Seajays, did you ever find help with this? I am having the same problem on a Toshiba laptop... only difference is mine was working before it crashed... I'd be interested in trying to work on this together...

Lightbulb upgrade kernel to latest version 2.4.23

Bonjour,
I also had the problem when I newly installed my debian. I was very puzzled because it was working on my old redhat. In fact there might be a bug in the kernel with 2.4.18 <= releases <= 2.4.?
Anyway, I upgraded my kernel the latest 2.4.23. And it's working fine.
Regards,

It's kernel problem. I had same problem with RH9 on Acer Travelmate 212TXV.
It was 2.4.20-8 kernel, AFAIK. It was fixed in later kernels.
