zd8000's have many different configurations available... about 40 different sub-models of it, in fact. The most common installed components are as follows:
- Pentium 4HT - 3.0GHz
- 80GB 4200RPM Hard Drive
- Dual Layer DVD Burner
- ATI Radeon Mobility x600 - 128MB dedicated or 256MB shared memory
- 1GB DDR RAM
- Generic Monitor (per HP) - max resolution 1440x900 or 1680x1050 depending on configuration
- Broadcom Wireless 802.11b/g
- Realtek(Conexant) Audio
- Realtek 8139 LAN
There's more of course, but these are the most important I think. I just finished installing Ubuntu 6.06, and while I'm not too happy with the "root" login being disabled, I'm quite impressed by how well the install did with no intervention from me. Everything was detected on first boot... LiveCD Boot actually, including Wireless and Wired LAN cards, sound card, graphics card capability, etc. I even popped in my USB Flash Drive and it detected that almost instantaneously. I would definitely suggest getting the newest version of Ubuntu if you hare having issues with your zd8000.
On that note, I plan to uninstall Ubuntu, just so I can attempt an install of Slackware 10.2 and Slackware 11, LFS 6.x, Gentoo, SuSE, and possibly a Mandrake distro just to check current version compatibility issues with the zd8000. It has been difficult in the past to find device drivers for the ATI Graphics card and Wireless Lan on these machines, but now with proprietary drivers available and ndiswrapper working just fine in most distros, it should be a great learning experience.
