Dell Inspiron 8000 soundcard problem

Hi all,

My problem is that it looks like the sound card was succesfully detected and configured during installation, there is no sound devices that I can use. I can only hear noise when playing video files with Totem. During the start-up it seems like it is initialized, and sometimes at that moment it plays a small beep.

¿Where should I go to check the sound card configuration? I have just used RedHat before and the installation put it to work perfectly so I never had to check this.

I use debian sarge, my kernel is: 2.6.7-1-386

This is my lspci:

May we also see the output from lsmod? Have you tried a mixer to see what it says, do you have the alsa packages installed?
good luck.

Hi bobdan99, Welcome to LQ. This is a pretty old post, but I'll try and help you.

I see from your Post Title you're running CentOS? If you could post the version and kernel, as well as the information requested in the posts above, we can answer some basic hardware questions. This will also help us figure out if you actually need to install Alsa or if there is another problem.
Good luck. ;-)

A bit of Googling is telling me you may be missing the alsa firmware package or the firmware option is turned off in your kernel config. You can go here and grab the appropriate source.
Good luck. ;-)

I have tried a couple times to access this site but it fails to load. I probably try it from another virtual Linux computer I have successfully loaded since I can't seem to get there via Windows and IE. You see, I installed Linux on an old laptop so that I might use it all the time and get used to it. However, I am dealing with trying to get a NIC going on this computer too so I have no network connectivity yet.

Thanks for all your help. I will continue to try to access this site. If it has to be accessed by the laptop, I will have to wait until I can get the NIC problem ironed out.

The Alsa ftp site shouldn't be OS or Browser specific, however, it appears the main ftp site is down at the moment. There are some other links to mirror sites here.

What is the issue with the NIC?

Good luck. ;-)
