OS doesn't start

It's not really a hardware problem, so I don't know if I should be posting in the distributions forum. But I run Fedora Core 5 on my laptop, and after I used yum extender yesterday to update it, I cannot start it anymore. It goes through the entire starting process, connects to the Interent and everything. However, at some point, it freezes and refuses to go any further.

I think I could do something in rescue mode, I just don't know what I should type, because I've never used it before. Any clues?

I have not used Fedora, but in the old RH distros, booting from the installation CD and
typing "linux rescue" (w/o quotes) would put you into rescue mode. If you are comfortable with the command line (which rescue mode would probably require anyway), I can highly recommend Damn Small Linux (a live CD) for rescue situations like this. Other live CDs would work as well.
