Nvidia problem?

I'm running gentoo 2006 with GeForce 6800 Go Ultra for reference.

I have latest nvidia module/kernel installed and working. .. .or so it seems. Here is my problem. The nvidia module is loaded, I get into X with the nvidia splash and everything seems to be ok. . . .

However, videos / games run VERY choppy, along with the "box expand" animation when you click anything in the gnome bar, so like clicking on terminal icon in gnome bar will make the box-expanding animation to where the window is going to open, but it goes very slow, essentially making open the program slower becuase of the added time to play the animation.

So my first reaction is to think that its something with the nvidia module not working properly, but if I do a few simple outputs, I can see that glx is running fine with direct 3d enabled and glxgears will register 10-12,000+ fps just fine without a problem.

I have tried setting my VideoRam in xorg config, as well as turning off dri, etc. and nothing seems to be the culprit.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Did you follow the install guide provided by Gentoo to install your card?

Just out of curiosity does the rest of your computer match the speed of your graphics card? Amount of RAM, processor speed, etc?

I skimmed over the documentation before (since I've setup xorg with nvidia cards several times without problems), but I just read it over in detail and saw the "opengl-update nvidia" command, telling X to use glx. Which I believe it already is since I have Direct 3d running, but I'll have to give it a try regardless.

I forgot to mention previously that every once in a while it works just fine.

Make sure to pay careful attention to the part about compiling your kernel with the proper options. I tried to get mine to work before they added that section... it wouldn't work.
