No pand in Fedora 9 with bluez-utils

Hi,

I'm trying to setup a PAN network on my laptop (Dell XPS M1530 - Fedora 9) to connect with my mobile phone (HTC TyTN II codename Kaiser). There is only one problem.

To set it up you have to have pand which is provided by bluez-utils. It's installed in /usr/bin.

But i have bluez-utils installed (and reinstalled) but it is not there. Anyone have an idea why that is or how to solve it?

Try running "rpm -ql bluez-utils". This will show you all the files that were installed by that package.

If it really wasn't part of the package try running "yum whatprovides pand" to see if the repositories show a different package with this daemon.

Thanks alot.

rpm -ql bluez-utils | grep pand
tells me:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/pand
/etc/sysconfig/pand

So it is installed. Only not in a directory in my (superuser) path.

Well neither of these appears to be an actual "bind" executable.

The file in init.d is an init script typically used for starting and stopping the daemon. Sometimes init scripts also have options for restart (bouncing) and status check. You should be able to run "service pand start" or "/etc/init.d/pand start" to run the script to see if it actually succeeds.

You vi /etc/init.d/pand to see what it does in the "start" routine to start pand. Perhaps it isn't actually starting a daemon of that name but rather some other service used for that purpose. (For example when you're running BIND the daemon that actually gets started is called named rather than bind - of course for that the init script is also called named.)

The file in /etc/sysconfig is likely a configuration script as that is where RedHat puts a lot of things. You can do "file /etc/sysconfig/pand" to see what it is.

If none of the above leads to finding the actual start for the appropriate daemon perhaps there is some config/compile that has to be done to make a "pand" for your system. You might want to check out any man pages that were installed from the bluez-utils package (which you can see with the rpm -ql command).

I haven't used bluez-utils or pand so the above is just based on the way things generally work on RedHat/Fedora/CentOS.
