network card w/inspiron 5000

I have a laptop (dell inspiron 5000) running redhat 9 exclusively and want to connect it to my comcast cable net hookup. i put in an "ez pccard 10 network card" and got it recognized in the hardware browser, but when i try to configure my account in the connection wizard it won't connect. I'm a linux novice and would greatly appreciate any help.

thnx

I do not use red hat nor do i use comcast, but i have used mandrake with road runner and adelphia and I never had to setup "an account".

What do you mean by setup an account? When you have a cable connection and you connect your computer through a router or directly to the cable modem (im assuming this is not wireless), you should automatically pick up on a connection as comcast (if like the other cable providers) checks your mac address to see if you are registered with them. So as long as your cable modem is turned on you should be able to connect any computer, no authentication needed.

Sorry if i misunderstood what you mean by account! If so could you please give specifcs as to what you are configuring that is not working?

On redhat, there is an "internet configuration wizard", I did the following:

Ethernet Device: (SMC 91c92 series PCMCIA) - "this seemed the closest to the card that I have."

Then entered provider name, login, password.

The connection was showed as inactive and when i hit activate i received the following message:

"Cannot active network device"

Thanks for any help you can give.
