I have tried mint 16, 18, 18.1, manjaro, openSuse tumbleweed but just none of them are able to get the gui started at all. The laptop has core i7 skylake with integrated graphics as well as Nvidia card. I just can't get why is no distro so recent is able to launch the live session desktop. Right now, I'm desperate to try out just anything that gives me a nice desktop capable of using the hardware I paid for. Without using Windows of course.
The laptop model is msi GL62 6QF.
Thanks
IF you haven't already go into the BIOS and set your laptop to boot to the CDROM drive or USB whichever way your trying to boot Linux live.
IF your trying to boot via USB:
Go into the BIOS and trun off fast boot and secure boot. Power off, insert Live USB powering back on then going back into the BIOS and select it in the UEFI boot menu to boot from.
The problem is likely with the open source nouveau graphics driver. After installation, add nouveau.modeset=0 to the kernel line before booting at the boot loader menu.
That's what I had to do with my MSI GT72 6QD, you won't get optimum resolution, but you'll get to a desktop. You will need to do this every boot till you make it permanent by adding that to the kernel line in /etc/default/grub or install proprietary nvidia drivers. Most Debian based systems offer seamless installation and upgrading nvidia drivers via package manager.
You could try to install the Nvidia proprietary driver. I think version 375.26 should do. First you should check out if your distro offers the package in its repositories. If not, then you can install the driver manually: check out http://www.nvidia.com/download/index.aspx?lang=en-us and look for the GeForce 900M series for Notebooks.

Nice laptop indeed.
All the best.
Only problem with this, is that without the mode setting, you don't get a command prompt never mind a desktop. Nouveau is loaded early in the boot process.

So with the proprietary driver installed you won't get a DE?

I have to disagree. Actually, the problem OP is getting is that nouveau does not support his recent graphic card. If the suitable proprietary driver is installed, and by the way, nouveau will have to be blacklisted somewhere, then his driver will support his card. Ok, one can tweak the mode setting to get an appropriate resolution in the framebuffer, but if Xorg is configured properly, he will definitely get X running. And this is basically what his need is right now.

I think you will have complete success if you follow those links that beachboy2 posted for you. Also; what aragorn2101 has said in his posts makes perfect sense and is wise counsel. However you will have to blacklist nouveau and edit your kernel line.
I encourage you to consider the advise given.
Have you had the time to follow through and if so; any success?
Even after all these years of being a(n inactive) member here, I'm overwhelmed with gratitude and equal measure of guilt as I have not replied to the thread for so long!!
I've had no broadband at home since 2nd Jan. Writing this from office, where I need to get busy soon. I've to make do with 2gb plan for a whole month (backup 4g plan), so I usually haven't got online from the home laptop, where I'm comfortable participating in LQ.
I'm really really eager to try out all the suggestions all of you offered, that I have not tried already. Primary hoping if nouveau.modeset =0 may work, because that's usually (I think) the step it stalls at. If any modeset = 1 will temporarily choose to use the Intel HD graphics card, thaat'll be still ok for the immediate future.
I've not decided on what distro to use, yet. I've always used Mint but I want to try out a bunch of others that I've downloaded. I use a USB disk to boot installation media which I create using dd command. I have set fastboot to off in bios and secure boot mode, I've tried with on and off.
Thanks to all of you who think the laptop's a good one. I wish I find soon if it really is.
If I could park this thread I would, but my ISP has given no ETA on when my home net will be back (I've given up calling and complaining) so I'm busy catching up on stuff on my external hard disk on my old laptop.
So, I'll be replying as soon as I try something.
