mine literally flies across the screen. Sometimes it will move slowly, then it will just shoot in one direction, and I can only begin to move the mouse if I whip my mouse to one side really fast. It is a hardware problem. It does this with gpm, x, windows 98 and xp, and games and stuff. HP's fix was really bad. It just checks to see if it is moving in a constant speed in one way for a few secs, and if it is it just moves it the other way at the same speed so (that makes it stop moving then). I've given up though...

Even when my thinkpad mouse does that, it only moves up on the screen alittle bit, and then it stops. I mean its not excessive (is that the right word to use?) on my thinpad. I guess different people have different stories, and I guess what also matters is how old the computer is, and how much it has been used.
yes that's about what mine does, i don't mind because i have a cheapy thinkpad, and it's lasted this long in iraq.

but that's just a messed up fix, i'm suprised, is it a dot or touchpad?

I fixed it!!!
How you may ask?
I took the laptop apart. Ripped the tin foil off, took the g-spot out. I then examined it.... I then found out that it can be adjusted. So I tightened it as far as it would go. Put it all back together. Turned it on, now it works perfectly. Stays just where it is suppose to !!!! h

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I think I know the answer to the problems with the 'dot'/'eraser head'/'pointer stick'/'track point'/'whatever you want to call it' mice found on IBM ThinkPads:

What happens, is that when the trackpoint is held in the same position for a certain about of time, it resets itself with that position being the center. Note that this is much more of a problem when the trackpoint is stiffer -- such as in the Dell Latitude C600; it is much easier to hold it in a steady position.

My guess is that if this behavior was not present, the situation would be much worse.

For all Laptop ownes with trakpoint pointers (e.g. Thinkpad owners) :
tha vast majoprity of sponataneous moue movements with the sensitivity degradeation of the trackpoint (try respostioing it with you hands and leave it for a week ~ worse case = replace the keyboard). If you pointer moves everyday, try diabling the trackpoint ans see if it stops ~ you'll be surprised

For everyone else:
check for spyware & ensure you anti-virus is up-to-date
