modem working (slmodem-2.9.10) - disconnecting

I'll probably feel stupid for this later, but at least I'll learn something

I am currently running Debian Sarge, kernel 2.4.22-ac4, on a Acer TM290LMi. Dial-up is my only access from home. Using said kernel, I have no problems making and sustaining a connection (using slmdm-2.7.10).

I have compiled the 2.6.9 kernel and have it running with no ( known ) problems. I have compiled and installed the slmodem-2.9.10 package, and it loads fine on start up.

The problem comes when I try to connect with the new kernel/package. It will open the line, dial, begin connecting - then kill itself. It seems to be at approximately the same time every time - as if there is a timer/kill switch that is not being deactivated or some sort of confirmation not being received. My best guess - I could easily be completely wrong

If anyone has any ideas or experience with this problem, I would appreciate any and all help available. Thank you for your time.

hey dude ..
try to use wvdial , as root
$apt-get install wvdial
then creat your wvdial.conf file , say /etc/wvdial.conf
using any texteditor such as emacs or nano ( not VIM :-p)
write the following :

[Dialer Defaults]
Modem = /dev/ttySL0 (that's my modem)
Baud = 460800
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ISDN = 0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Phone = 07770777 ( change it to your ISP phone number )
Username = gnlinux ( change it to your username )
Password = richardmstallman ( change it to your password )
Carrier Check = no
Check Def Route = no

and then save it
as root as well do the following command
$route del default

now run wvdial
$wvdial &

hope to may help you out
cheers
