Hi,

I ran across an old Compaq Armada laptop, circa '99 with Win2k on it and decided to put RedHat 9 as well. Everything went well with the exception of the modem not being found. I hope someone is able to help me with this problem. Maybe you have some suggestions on this. Any help is greatly appreciated. Lemme give you some specs about the laptop:

* it has a dual boot (win2k & RedHat 9)
* 266 mhz
* 96 RAM
* modem is a Compaq 7000 Global SpeedPaq Telephony


I'm not an expert with Linux (not yet), but it looks like a formidable competitor to microsoft.

First is to figure out what the chipset is and even if there are drivers for it, there are a lot of modems out there that are unsupported.

Check out the script for checking the type and then hope there's a driver set it points to. Getting these things to work isn't that much fun. Also, look for a rather comprehensive "LinuxAnswer" shortly, that's where I got the link from.
