mepis
I would like to take this time to advertise the MEPIS distribution of Linux. I bought my Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop a few months ago. I never had it booted into Windows. The first distro I tried was Fedora 3 test 3. That was all good until I did an update and everything broke! So I tried Debian and after messing with the xf86config-4 file I finally got the display working right. But, though I was very happy with debian I wanted to get my laptop connected to my wireless access point. I went out to Best Buy and picked up a Linksys PCMCIA card. I got ndiswrapper installed, but the device would not be detected by the Kernel. Instead of installing a new Kernel or patch I did a little research and found out Mepis includes support for Linksys PCMCIA cards. I was very glad to have Mepis be Debian based as well. The install of Mepis is very simple. You simply boot it up like a knoppix cd and choose "install me" on the desktop. The only thing I don't like is that you can't manually select packages you want and don't want, it installes just about EVERYTHING available. After the install I removed openoffice 1.1 and replaced it with the new 1.9 beta using alien to install the rpm's from openoffice.org. I also installed libdvdcss*.deb to get encrypted dvd's playing. I removed apache2 since I do not need a web server. I just did the install today, so I will be going through synaptic to find other packages I don't need, and maybe some I do need. I am very very very happy with Mepis and I think everyone should use it.

still using mepis
i've done some fine tuning of mepis and have desided to try kxdocker on the desktop...if anyone has used kxdocker before, please tell me why I have two dockers, the main kxdocker on the bottom of screen, and a tiny docker in the right side of my screen. I cannot close it and it doesn't respond to the mouse. Have I done something wrong, or do I need to see the config file. please help.

mepis running strong
I don't know how, but the problem mentioned above is now gone. After I rebooted again today, I was glad to find it gone. My system is still running strong and have added gkrellm to monitor the system load. ANYONE INTERESTED IN LINUX ON LAPTOP SHOULD DEFINATELY USE SIMPLY MEPIS (and other mepis products).
My question now is, how do I change to boot splash screen. I would like to hide the kernel boot up messages. Anyone who has done this in mepis please tell me how, thanks in advance.
