Question Mandriva 2008 boot stalls on "setting hostname localhost:" on HPdv9700t

Hi, I recently purchased the above laptop which came with:

1. AMD Turion 64x2 mobile processor running @ 2.0 GHz
2. 3.00Gb RAM
3. Two (2) 120Gb drives
4. NVIDIA 512Mb GeForce 8400M video
5. VISTA Home Premium 32.

I replaced the VISTA drive with an eqivalent clean drive on which I installed XP Home. I installed Mandriva 2008 w/64 bit support on the second drive for a dual boot system. I encountered no issues with the Mandriva installation but when I try to boot Linux from the hard drive, the boot stalls on "setting hostname localhost: ". I also installed the Mandriva Linux to a clean single-disk config but got the same result. I can find no boot option or info that seems to apply to this problem and welcome new ideas.
