Mandriva 2006 hangs on install

Hello everybody,

I'm trying to install Mandriva 2006 on my new Toshiba Satellite laptop. I've download the CD's and validated them with the md5 checksum.

When I boot from the first CD I get the menu with which I can choose between "<f1> for more options" and "<enter> for installation". When I hit enter the blue progress bars appears and I starts loading the installation menu. After that I get the blue screen with the normal background ("Free" and a pinguin) but the installation menu does not appear. I've tried 'linux noapic nolapic' but this generated the same error. With Alt-F3 I've found the following:

warning, insmod failed (ohci-hcd (null)) (-1)
warning, insmod failed (keybdev (null)) (1)
warning, insmod failed (ds (null)) (1)
CM: warning, Card Services release does not match kernel (generally harmless)

And then it stop. Perhaps there are more errors above this, but I don't know how to scroll up in the kernel message window.

Does anybody now what the problem is and how it can be fixed.

Best regards and thanks in advance,
Jethro Borsje

i'm not sure but if it is an AMD laptop this may help (might with Intel though)

Can you press esc
at the blue progress bar?
there is info that is more human readable behind it.

you didnt use noapic and nolocalapic at the same time?

Since the only noticeable problem is USB
try disbaling it in Bios (just for installation purposes)

NOTE:: Hold CTRL and press PageUP/PageDoWN to scroll through console text.

'linux noauto' works! Now I can go trough the installation proces. Does the "noauto" option has any consequence for the future use of Mandriva on my laptop?

The problem now is that it doesn't automatically recognises my videocard (ATI Raedon Express M200). This means that I can't get Mandriva to work properly. I tried a few of the given ATI drivers but the al give a screen which isn't workable. Can anybody help me with this?

no thats normal issue i have the desktop version and Mandriva cannot recognise it,
(ati Driver issue more than anything)

https://support.ati.com/ics/support/...ge&folderID=27

grab the rpm version.

Someone pointed out to me that it doesnt install because rpm and urpmi refuse to overwrite files if they exist.

you need to

rpm -i --force ati*.rpm

for it to work properly

I think I need to have a working configuration first before I try to install the ati-drivers? Right now Mandriva is installed, but the screen isn't usable. I can go to the commandline and type "mcc" to choose the right display properties, but I can't seem to find a working combination. The graphical card is set to Vesa. Does anybody know what to choose for a Toshiba notebook with a 15.4" widescreen?

the drivers RPM creates an appropriate xorg.conf configuration file

Is there a driver that starts with fb ? like fb1024x768 ? I've used Mandriva off and on since 8.0, never had a problem until 2006. Use mostly knoppix now. Has anyone else had a problem with 2006 hanging during install ? Happened both to 2 laptops and a desktop. I thought the problem might be bad media, so I downloaded the iso's on a different machine, and reburned them. I did get further into the install....but it still hung. Any tips from anyone out there ? What am I doing wrong ?

I'm glad it worked for you! I've never had any problems before Mandriva 2006 to. I've read of more people having some problems with it while they never had any problems before.

Mine are still not completly solved, because I can't get dual monitors to work and I also have a problem with fstab.

the fb(framebuffer) can be set in your mbr (brub or lillo).

you can access these in console with "drakconf"
you can allso set your x server with this tool.

you might wanna start with linux-nonfb at start, this could in some cases cause a crash.
