Madwifi, HP NC6000

I found a page regarding the installation of madwifi on a new laptop - The HP NC6000 with built-in wireless. I'm using Slackware-current and lspci tells me:

02:04.0 Network controller: Intel Corp. PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter (rev 04)

As I understand, it's an Atheros chipset, and it sounds like it should work, from what I can find on google.

I followed the directions here:

http://madwifi.sourceforge.net/dokuw...e089e34701d6b1

...to no avail. I tried to "modprobe ath_pci" and I don't get any error messages back, and dmesg tells me:

ath_hal: module license 'Proprietary' taints kernel.
ath_hal: 0.9.14.9 (AR5210, AR5211, AR5212, RF5111, RF5112, RF2413)
wlan: 0.8.4.5 (EXPERIMENTAL)
ath_rate_sample: 1.2
ath_pci: 0.9.4.12 (EXPERMENTAL)
eth0: no IPv6 routers present

Are the drivers loading? iwconfig tells me there are no wireless extensions and the blue light for wireless hasn't even blinked at me.

I did find a post that said somebody changed an entry in their /etc/modprobe.conf from "alias eth1 ath_pci" to alias ath0 ath_pci". There were no entries at all in my /etc/modprobe.conf file so I added "alias ath0 ath_pci" with no effect.

I'm at an absolute loss as to what to do next.... any ideas?

Thangew!

After a bit more searching, it seems that some of the early HP NC6000's were kicked out the door with Intel chipsets for wireless.

I did a "removepkg madwifi" and moved on... I downloaded the IPW2100 drivers and firmware from http://ipw2100.sourceforge.net and followed the directions. I'm still not sure which file it's reading from (/etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts or the /etc/rc.d/rc.wireless.conf). I cut/pasted a bit of info to them both to be sure I had my bases covered - info regarding keys, essid, etc..

After compiling the ipw2100 drivers with "make" and "make install", I moved the firmware drivers to the hotplug firmware directory (/lib/firmware in slackware 10.2).

I then did a modprobe ipw2100 and nearly fell out of my chair when the blue wireless light came on.

Just for grins, I re-booted and had wireless loading at boot!

It only took me three days to get it this time!
