Linux (Knoppix) on Sony Vaio

I'm trying to use Linux' dd command to create a backup image to a Maxtor external hard drive using Adaptec FireWire or Adaptec USB 2.0 PCMCIA cards. It starts off fine but dies after 2.5-3 Gb. I've used the same hardware and the dd on other laptops, but the Sony has serious hardware issues. What's up?
