LILO loads slow

I have a Toshiba Satellite L10 laptop with Slackware 10.2 installed. The system run fine with the battery monitor running using smart battery system for Linux and the 2.6.13 kernel. The only problem I have is that when lilo starts I select Slackware Linux 10.2 from menu, press enter, then it prints "Loading Slackware Linux 10.2 ..." and for about five seconds it continues to print "." until the line it printed "Loading Slackware Linux 10.2 ..." is almost full. In the end it looks like this: "Loading Slackware Linux 10.2 .........................................................". After that the system loads normally and runs fine.
On my PC this operation takes less than a second but on the laptop it takes much longer to complete. I also have SUSE Linux OSS 10 installed on my laptop and GRUB doesn't behaves the way lilo does: if I install GRUB from SUSE 10 and add Slackware to the menu then on boot Slackware loads in a split of a second.
Could you tell me what's wrong with LILO on my laptop?
Thanks!

you should simply recompile your kernel. choose only the drivers you need.

My IBM X40 had the same problem, solved by adding "compact" to lilo.conf.
