lid action with different kernels

I recently reinstalled linux on my laptop, and I never had the lid button working on my inspiron 8500 (debian kernel 2.6.4) ... when I reformatted to kernel 2.4.x the lid button worked perfectly (screen turned off when the button was pushed), but when I upgraded to the 2.6.6 kernel (or any 2.6.x kernel for that matter) the lid didn't work at all. I asked a linux guru who I know form school, he tried a few things with echo comands in the acpi events, and the acpid seems to go into the lid comand/event but it's doesn't do anything ... he said it could be something with the authority or something like that ??? so I'm confused on what to do about the lid action.

Thanks in advance,
Piotr K.

well, acpi has some problems, if worst comes to worst you could just run apm on the new kernels, at the moment i'm still on apm because it works well on my laptop, i'll try acpi again on kernel 2.6.7 but until then: stick with apm is you have problems with acpi
