Will not startup after lid is closed

I am running Mandrake 10.0 Community on an IBM ThinkPad T20. Whenever I shut the lid of my computer, the screen will come out all garbled and the only way that I can fix it from there is to try and manuver the mouse down into the corner and shut down.

However, it will not do this when I tell it to go on standby. How do I disable this feature?

check bios settings, for screen suspend, or power save features, if you need to close the screen without shutting down, then you should adjust the power save features, and check the wake on lan settings.
