Laptop hardware control (e.g. brightness)

I'm primarily interested in controlling brightness on my Compaq EVO N600c. I don't have a preference as to how, so long as it actually has the effect of dimming the backlight, and not colors, gamma, etc.

I've read a number of posts but my brief experience with Linux has shown me that trial IS error. Thus I was hoping that someone might be able to shed some, uh, light, on the dimming process.

I know some have had no problem just using the keyboard Fn keys.

I know some have used ACPI. But it looks to me as if ACPI is a rather modular and robust system, not just a simple install or not. For example, I already am using ACPI to control CPU throttling, but to my knowledge there is no module currently installed to handle LCD brightness. Where would I find this if so? How would I use it?

Thanks.

Thanks
