Inactive headphone sockets

I have a Dell Studio 1745 64 bit laptop which came with Windows 7 but is now multi-partitioned with Ubuntu and linux Mint installed. Generally, everything works but I am unable to use either of the two headphone sockets in the linux OS's,though there is no problem in Windows 7. I have tried the audio configuration modules without success. Is there any tweak that will activate the sockets?

Could expand on what you mean when you say you checked "the audio configuration modules"? Which modules and what did you find?

frankbell: e.g. In Linux 12 click top left corner//click Applications//click System Set//click Sound//click Output//Set "Connector" to "Analogue Headphones".

This does not activate the headphone sockets.

Thanks.

I don't have a copy of Mint handy for testing, but I think it might have ALSA installed in a layer underneath Pulseaudio.

Try this: Open a terminal in either of the Linux distros and run the command "alsamixer." If ALSA's installed, a ncurses GUI should open. If it does, check the setting to make sure that the headphones are not muted at a lower level.

The Arch wiki has an excellent article on ALSA.

This is just a shot in the dark, mind you. Good luck.

What are the levels for headphone, speaker, and PCM? When I switched from OSS the new drivers set PCM at 0 by default: I have to set it in rc.local to have it non-zero at boot.

Alsamixer shows all levels at midway, i.e. 5 out of 10

Try setting them all at 100% Some machines have multiple audio devices. On one the second was the one I was using. Only when I set their volumes up did I get sound.

Changing sound levels makes no difference. N.B. I have no problem in Windows, only in Linux.
