ibm tp 240; pcmcia cd rom not recognised

IBM Thinkpad 240 192Mb Ram 300Mhz Celeron
I have installed PCLinuxOS as a dual boot with XP. It was exceptionally easy and the machine runs beautifully. Everything was picked up and works straight out of the box except the pcmcia cdrom.
The pcmcia slot picks up a usb2 card and a network card but not the cd rom.
I have checked the cd in another laptop and it appears to be working.
I'm a newbie at this and your thought would be much appreciated.

See if the cdrom is compatible with Linux. There is a hardware compatibility list that you can find. It should be.

See if you have a pcmcia driver built into the kernel or loaded the module.

Code:
> sudo lsmod
> sudo modprobe pcmcia
You would need the right module name for your system and kernel. You could then add the module to a boot parameter and initrd if you use one to boot your system.
