Hi guys.
I just recently got SimplyMepis working and i tried to install a External LG DVDRW Drive, the only thing is it is recognised as a CD Drive rather than a DVD. Would someone be able to help me change this. It really bugs me. Even if it makes no difference what it is called I would really like to change it.
You can change the devices name by editing the /etc/fstab file. If you posted it's contents then I could tell you exactly what to edit, but you could probably find out yourself with a little Googling.
Thanks for your help too... i have definately googled myself to death trying to come up with an answer, and nowhere supports this. Just thought that i would let you know that i want it changed from cdrom1 at /dev/cdrom to permantly stay DVD at /dev/dvd.
I do not know if Mepis uses udev. If it does you will have to change udev configs, but it will not be easy. I suggest to not edit the udev configs because you could make Linux to not create the device at boot up. It does not hurt anything if the drive is /dev/cdrom1. That is just a block device that points to the real drive. The fstab file is there so the devices are automatically mounted at boot time and it mounts when you specify "mount /mnt/cdrom1" as a user. You can rename /mnt/cdrom1 as /mnt/dvd but make sure you edit /etc/fstab to make the changes work. cat some file in the /proc directory. It shows more information about devices.
ok, yes, this is good. but when i try to play a DVD on Xine, it says that there is no DVD:/. i am thinking that i have to change the dvd name from cdrom1 to dvd. but the thing is, if i had a V8 car and it would be pointless me having a V4 sticker on it. plesase, i want to rename it. sorry.
