I think that this has something to do with /etc/X11/xorg.conf. My friend once altered it to change his resolution, so I'm guessing that if you can't alter it WITHIN the GUI (GNOME's system tools?), then you should take a look at /etc/X11/xorg.conf under the "Monitor section" and "Screen sections". I think that's where your problem may lie. Make sure you look at the
Google search results first! You may find a tut or two telling you how to do it. If you change your resolution to your native screen's resolution that may help, or there may be some odd setting within the xorg.conf. Best of luck!
