HP N3390 and a 3cm screen gap

I recently installed Ubuntu on an HP Pavilion N3390 and have noticed a rather curious thing. No matter weither X is up or I'm at a terminal there is a 3cm gap between the border of the monitor and the content being displayed. The video card is a Silicon Motion Lynx3DM that uses the siliconmotion driver, at least when running X.

I've tried googling for this, because I'm sure someone else must have had this problem, but I couldn't get any useful results. There aren't any good keywords, you see.

Does anyone have any clue with what's going on? It's kind of a whimsical problem.

I think that this has something to do with /etc/X11/xorg.conf. My friend once altered it to change his resolution, so I'm guessing that if you can't alter it WITHIN the GUI (GNOME's system tools?), then you should take a look at /etc/X11/xorg.conf under the "Monitor section" and "Screen sections". I think that's where your problem may lie. Make sure you look at the Google search results first! You may find a tut or two telling you how to do it. If you change your resolution to your native screen's resolution that may help, or there may be some odd setting within the xorg.conf. Best of luck!
