I have similar problem, with an HPdesktop running the latest PCLinuxOS. It has 2Gb ram and pentium 4 and it spends 5 minutes or more just swapping stuff in and out.
Can anybody tell me what the process "khugepaged" (it runs under "kthreadd") does as it is running a lot?
"kswapd0" is also running far more that I would normally expect.
As KEES74 said you cannot do any thing while it swaps stuff around. I was running MiniMe2008 on dual amd processor and it never had this sort of problem
