Hard drive trashed and not mountable

I've got a HP mini-note, with no CD/ROM drive but too many system hangs turned the file system to swiss cheese. An inept use of fsck left it with an unreadable sector and complaining "no operating system"

I tried an open SUSE live CD on a USB stick. It wouldn't run as it couldn't mount the HDD.

Is there any live OS that can be booted from a USB stick that would load without mounting the HD to alow me to try and repair or reformat the HDD?

I've recently discovered SystemRescueCD, which has a lot of different boot options, and (as per the name) is designed specifically for recovery purposes. It can be installed to USB.
