General request

Hello,

at the moment I do not planning to buy a laptop, but some guys asked me what manufacture is good for using Linux. I know it's not easy to answer this in a general way, so I will ask it from the back: What manufactures are not recommended due to too much special Hardware without Linux support?

Here are some criterias given to me:

1.) must be supported
- Graphic card support (1024x786, true color)
- On board sound
- On board LAN
- On board USB
- HDD/CD/DVD
- Touche pad
- Keyboard

2.) should be
- WLan
- IR
- FireWire
- basic power saving
- PCMCIA slot
- On board modem/ISDN (bewteen criteria 2 and 3)

3.) nice to have
- advanced powersaving, suspend to disk
- 3D acceleartion
- TV out
- On board modem/ISDN

Thanks a lot
R

I have had good results from Toshiba and IBM. Check out www.linux-laptop.net and read the reports against a wide variety of makes and models.

I love my Dell Inspiron 700m. No IR (but for me that wasn't an issue). Take a look at its features; there are many tutorials and HOWTOs on getting Linux (many flavors) on it.
