Hi,

Any one knows how to configure ES1978 maestro sound card on RHEL 2.4.21. whenever I try to detect the sound card I get the following message:
The maestro driver could not be loaded. This soundcard may not be compatible with Red Hat Linux.

I have tried searching for the driver for it but I have been unsuccessful. I have Linux running on my Toshiba Laptop Portege 7200 and I am very new to Linux.

Any one please help.

your driver is es1968 from ALSA by ESS tech.
if you cant use alsaconf to configure then you might need to install ALSA from scratch.
first, your kernel needs to be modular for ALSA.
then you need 4 packages from ALSA
check out here

it might be confusing so make your own notes

configure alsamixer or kmix

and finally permissions
chmod 777 /dev/mixer
chmod 777 /dev/mixer0
chmod 777 /dev/dsp
chmod 777 /usr/bin/alsamixer
chmod -R 777 /dev/snd

the configure may not work or there might be a lot of road blocks to tweak so ...
