last year after loading up linux on my laptop i was testing and was getting avg. speed of 340-350 mbs max 535 . i was wondering what others out there where acheiving
Download speed depends mostly on the internet connection, not the OS. There is no way to make accurate comparisons between locations across the world, or indeed in the US, because the ISPs provide such a wide variety of connection speeds, even in the same cities, for different prices. It also depends heavily on the site you're downloading from. If the server is slow, the download will be slow regardless of the available bandwidth.
As stated speed depends mostly on the type of broadband service (including hardware) and what plan you purchased. If you are getting download speeds of 350 Mbps then you probably have fiber running to your house (I assume). If you took your laptop to another location that did not have fiber or if it was using a lower cost plan your download speed would be different regardless of operating system. Roger's offers plans with download speeds from 5 Mbps - 1 Gbps.
