kde & gnome dell latitude d810 desktop effects

replying your post/question. Nothing happens when pressing ctrl+alt+ right/left arrow. since posting the original i have completely reinstalled suse v11.2 with both the gnome and kde desktops installed. also check desktop effects so that i know compiz was installed. also making sure all updates were installed. first logged in as root w/kde desktop and turned on desktop effects. adding wobbly windows and desktop cube to the defaults. wobbly windows works fine. desktop cube does not work. logged out and logged into root using gnome desktop. turned on "desktop effects" and received the error using gnome, "Desktop effects are not supported on your current hardware / configuration. Would you like to activate them anyway" clicked no and exited. why would i be able to have it working under kde logged in as root with the initial installation and now after a fresh load it does not work period. I am now downloading the latest linux driver for the "mobility ati radeon x600" card that is installed in this dell latitude d810. I see no reason to have to go this far but something is definitely causing this issue. i also test opengl support from the command line in using the command: glxinfo and received a bunch of output.
here is a brief sample:
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes

Can't think of anything else to add at this point. any assistance/help would be appreciated.

sincerely, jeff...

The keypress is the compiz and gnome default to switch workspaces - the only reason for it not to happen is if you do not have multiple workspaces.

Your graphics card is supported by the radeonHD driver - ATI are no longer providing support for it with the proprietary driver. IIRC: this means the specs have been released to the free software community.

Please see this OpenSUSE Forums thread for details.

radeon driver opensuse v11.2

well I have completely reinstalled everything once again and have finally gotten desktop effects to work in both kde and gnome. I have found that both environments with desktop effects enabled have been rather unstable. my machine locks up hard for no apparent reason in both environments. I lose all keyboard control so i cannot restart X get to a command line or anything requiring a cold boot. Both gnome and KDE seem to be stable without desktop effects enabled. This is not a hardware malfunction as this dell d810 works flawlessly with both opensuse v11.1 and windows xp sp3. I checked and I am running the radeon video driver. I also upgraded KDE to v4.3.4 hoping for more stability with no luck. Unless I get this sorted out soon I will go back to the more stable environment of opensuse v11.1. Also considering Ubuntu to see how it works. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The previous post stated this issue was already resolved in another post. Would be nice to know the subject or post information to review it.

thanks again for everyones support.

sincerey, jeff...

3D effects are supported with your card using RadeonHD, not the plain radeon driver.

If you are reporting that compiz works with RadeonHD under 11.1, but not under 11.2, then you should submit a bug report against RadeonHD and the kernel version to the OpenSUSE maintainers. They will be able to determine if this needs upstream attention.

Note: it is not surprising that upgrading the desktop environment has no effect on the stability of the graphics driver: the driver lives in the kernel.

Well that's completely wrong. There are no cards supported by radeonhd that aren't supported by radeon, and the only feature that radeonhd has supported that radeon only recently gained support for is the HDMI audio interface.
