Dell d610 : recognising CD/DVD-R/W drive in 2.6.15

Hi
after upgrading from kernel 2.4.27 to 2.6.15 I no longer seem to be able to mount my CD/DVD burner. (Knoppix liveCD sees it OK, the CD at least, so nothing wrong with drive)
Believe this is linked to SCSI transition of drivers.
Rest of disk system OK (/hda -> /sda transition went OK)
I think I should now see a /dev/scd0 for the drive but there is no scd0 declared.

No /dev/hdc anymore which was old IDE way I believe.

using debian

what does one need to do?

You sure it isn't /dev/sr0 instead of /dev/scd0? That's the device name for my CD/DVD burner.

recognising DVD/CD burner

so what are the steps needed in Linux2.6 to bring up /dev/sc** and fstab and mount options for the cd/dvd drive, if they don't seem to be recognised?
There should be a general technique, no?
Can anyone detail a series of options?
Were my scsi kernel config options wrong perhaps ?

So after trying many options in 2.6.15 kernel, playing around with ATA/ATAPI options thinking there's some kind of conflict. (check dmesg to see how kernel boots (or /var/log/kern.log) )

Upgraded to 2.6.16 from 2.6.15 (no change, CD/DVD still not recognised)

finally found a kernel boot-line option to add to /boot/grub/menu.lst : libata.atapi_enabled=1

If anyone can explain why this is necessary to set this ,

check dmesg to see how kernel boots (or /var/log/kern.log), relevant section is :
Mar 23 16:46:17 localhost kernel: scsi1 : ata_piix
Mar 23 16:46:17 localhost kernel: Vendor: TSSTcorp Model: DVD+-RW TS-L532B Rev: DE03
Mar 23 16:46:17 localhost kernel: Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 05

device is recognised as /dev/sr0, seems to be able to read cdrom and dvdrom and automounts.

I didn't expect it to be so much trouble with 2.6.16
