Cannot enable SHMConfig

Hi!

I've recently upgraded from Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04 but now my Synaptics touchpad stopped working. I've tried adding lines as described in different posts in xorg.conf and adding an fdi file, but nothing seems to help. Setting "SHMConfig" to "on" or "true" in xorg.conf doesn't do anything.

If I could get the synclient daemon to work, I might try some stuff described on Ubuntu related forums, but that seems to be the problem:

Code:
$ synclient -l
Can't access shared memory area. SHMConfig disabled?
I have tried editing fstab:

Code:
$ cat /etc/fstab

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>
proc            /proc           proc    defaults        0       0
# /dev/sda1
UUID=0b22ce51-8e72-466c-8247-426d0c26c212 /               ext3    defaults,errors=remount-ro 0       1
# /dev/sda5
UUID=aaa10e10-3d84-4119-8cff-996b3a77a0e6 none            swap    sw              0       0
/dev/scd0       /media/cdrom0   udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec 0       0
/dev/fd0        /media/floppy0  auto    rw,user,noauto,exec 0       0
tmpfs           /dev/shm        tmpfs   defaults        0       0
Does anyone have an idea what I can do to enable SHMConfig? Any help appreciated.

My log says:

Code:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep synaptics
(II) LoadModule: "synaptics"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input//synaptics_drv.so
(II) Module synaptics: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
Synaptics Touchpad no synaptics event device found (checked 18 nodes)
(EE) Synaptics Touchpad no synaptics touchpad detected and no repeater device
(II) UnloadModule: "synaptics"
Does that give anyone any good ideas?

The problem seems similar to a problem I had previously after installing a new kernel (which I then de-installed because of the mouse problem):

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1008358

Is it a kernel problem? I booted with an old kernel in Ubuntu 8.04 and it seems to persist, so in that case I don't know what's going on...

I had a similar problem on my Ubuntu 9.04 install. But the problem got sorted out after I followed the link given by mesiol above.
