can't connect to net with Inspiron 9100

I just installed Slackware on Dell Inspiron 9100 and am working through the details of getting it up and running. Right now the big hurdle has turned out to be the onboard ethernet. I hook it up to my DSL modem but I get nothing. Upon bootup, this is the error that I get...

dhcpdc[152] : timed out waiting for a valid DHCP server response

b44: eth0: BUG! Timeout waiting for bit 80000000 of register 428 to clear.
b44: eth0: BUG! Timeout waiting for bit 80000000 of register 428 to clear.

b44: eth0: BUG! Timeout waiting for bit 00000002 of register 42c to clear.

Btw, I run netconfig and set it up to connect via DHCP and it still does this.

I'm thinking maybe there's something special that I need to do to set up the ethernet with it being onboard.

What do ya think?

Vindane,
I'd like you to do the command lspci -vv (as root) and post the part of the output that mentions your ethernet controller, it will look something like the following,
Code:
02:01.0 Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3C920B-EMB Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller (rev 40)
Subsystem: Asustek Computer, Inc.: Unknown device 80ab
Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B-
        Status: Cap+ 66Mhz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR-
Latency: 32 (2500ns min, 2500ns max), cache line size 08
Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 5
        Region 0: I/O ports at c000 [size=128]
        Region 1: Memory at d1000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128]
Expansion ROM at <unassigned> [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 2

Hi, since I have the same problem with dhcpd, and a Dell machine, I'm posting a reply to this.
I'm on Slackware10.0, kernel 2.6.7, Dell Optiplex GX270.

My nic is (lspci -vv):
Code:
02:0c.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corp. 82540EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 02)
Subsystem: Dell Computer Corporation: Unknown device 0151
        Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV+ VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR+ FastB2B-
        Status: Cap+ 66Mhz+ UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR-
Latency: 64 (63750ns min), cache line size 10
Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 18
        Region 0: Memory at fcfe0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128K]
        Region 2: I/O ports at df40 [size=64]
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 2
                Flags: PMEClk- DSI+ D1- D2- AuxCurrent=0mA PME(D0+,D1-,D2-,D3hot+,D3cold+)
                Status: D0 PME-Enable- DSel=0 DScale=1 PME-
        Capabilities: [e4] PCI-X non-bridge device.
                Command: DPERE- ERO+ RBC=0 OST=0
                Status: Bus=0 Dev=0 Func=0 64bit- 133MHz- SCD- USC-, DC=simple, DMMRBC=0, DMOST=0, DMCRS=0, RSCEM- Capabilities: [f0] Message Signalled Interrupts: 64bit+ Queue=0/0 Enable-
                Address: 0000000000000000 Data: 0000
I think it's a matter of a time out waiting for a valid dhcp response, since when I manually restart the /etc/rc.d/rc.inetd1 net script I manage to have an ip address assigned from my dhcp server.
Should I raise the dhcpd latency?
Thanks in advance.
