Broke mbr Vista installing Ubuntu 12.04

Did an install of Ubuntu 12.04 sucessfully. Checked the Vista side and only the desktop came up after an
error message. The screen was full of its icons but
that was it.
I guess the mbr was corrupted.
Can someone help me out. Its a friends Acer 4620z laptop. I do not believe he has his Vista CD.

From Ubuntu, go here, do as it says, and post the RESULTS.txt.

Did Grub2 get installed?

What do you see in the list for Grub2?

Is Ubuntu booting ok?

If you can boot to the desktop and see your icons the MBR part of the booting process is long gone and works flawlessly. There must be a different problem.

The Grub2 menu shows:
To the effect:

Ubuntu
test
test
Vista (something)
Vista (something)

Ubuntu boots and runs just fine.
As I remember when I first tried Vista I clicked
on the first Vista and that was the one that gave
the error messages. I then clicked the second Vista
and it displayed the desktop with all the icons.

If you can boot with the second option to the Desktop which appears as it should according to your post, what is the problem? Do you just not want 2 entries in the menu? That's easily resolved. Or is there some other problem you haven't mentioned?

Should have been more clear. After clicking on second Vista you are taken
to the desktop with all the icons, clicking on IE or some other icon and
nothing happens. Also from the Start menu trying to go to say Computer
nothing happens.

Your last post would indicate it has nothing to do with the mbr or the partitions but problems in vista. If you can boot to the vista Desktop, then the mbr and Grub bootloader as well as the windows bootloader were all successful. Did you install Ubuntu on a separate partition or did you install it inside windows with the WUBI installer? Could you boot Ubuntu and run this command and post the output here:

Code:
sudo fdisk -l
That is a Lower Case Letter L in the command and you should be prompted for a password, the password of the user created during the Ubuntu installation.

Ubuntu install was a standard install. Side by side with windows vista.

sudo fdisk -l

In order to get more detailed information on your system and boot files, boot Ubuntu and go to the site below. There is a link in the Description box on that page. Go to it and read the instructions, might take notes. Then download and run it. The link provides specific instructions. Make sure you know where it downloads to as it may not be the Desktop directory but the /home/user/Downloads directory. Run the script from a terminal and post the output. You should have a results.txt file in your /home/user directory.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/

I'm not sure what the problem is but it seems the Ubuntu Grub bootloader is working fine and it is some problem in vista.

Seem to be having problem, download went OK. See below:

ray@tallguy:~$ sudo ~/Downloads/bootinfoscript
[sudo] password for ray:
sudo: /home/ray/Downloads/bootinfoscript: command not found

You need to extract bootinfoscript-061.tar.gz first and that can be done by right-clicking the icon and then selecting on of the Extract options. You should then see a folder bootinfoscript-061 in that (Downloads) directory. You need to make it executable if it is not and then change to the bootinfoscript-061 directory in Downloads to run bootinfoscript.

Nothing wrong with the boot files or Grub, as expected. You have a correct entry for vista in grub.cfg, the partition and uuid are both correct and you can boot to it. Since Ubuntu is on a separate partition, your problem seems to be unrelated to Ubuntu or Grub. Nothing incorrect in the output you posted. Had you made any changes to vista just prior to installing Ubuntu because it is not until you get into vista that you get problems.
