Hi!
I am experiencing some problems while trying to install Linux on an acer Aspire 5560.
The laptop had a broken HD and i replaced it with an SSD.
BIOS finds the hard drive, and i formatted it to ex4 prior to installing it in the laptop.
The OS I want installed is Mint 17.1 cinnamon 64-bit. I also tried Fedora 21 desktop 64-bit, Lubuntu 32-bit, and the latest Ubuntu desktop 64-bit.
I verified the MD5SUM on the downloaded iso's.
There are similar problems with all of them. Bootloader is displayed and i select the standard option of launching the live os. And the computer freezes at the splash screen.
I have tried 3 different USB sticks using unetbootin, dd, and liveusb-creator. I even burnt the Mint image to a DVD. Same story...
When removing the "quiet splash" option, the last screen displayed is:
Code:
Begin: Loading essential drivers ... done
Begin: Running /scripts/init-premount ... done
Begin: Mounting root file system ... Begin: Running /scripts/casper-premount ... [ 11.128472] EXT4-fs (sda1): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)

done.

I am out of ideas. Can somebody help me?

Update
So when booting of the Mint Live DVD I first get the black and white GRUB menu. If I then press 'c' to enter the GRUB commandline and type "exit". I enter into the more graphical Mint boot menu. From there I can select "compatibility mode" (the option exist in the black and white menu but it doesn't work).
Selecting compatibility mode works. I can boot up Mint without hardware graphics.
Can we draw the conclusion that the problem is with graphics?
