Best Linux OS to install on IBM Thinkpad

Hi

Complete Linux novice here

I've installed Hardy Heron onto my mac and loved it so far (apart from flash player probs!! I'm now considering putting Ubuntu on my daughters IBM Thinkpad 2653 laptop as an alternative to windows 2000. It has a Pentium 4 1.6 ghz cpu, a 40G HD and 510 mb of RAM. The graphics card is an Ati mobilty radeon 7500.

Im looking for advice as to which OS would work well with these specs. Is Hardy Heron a good option?

Many thanks

Dar

You can have a look here -->http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/ and see if someone else has installed a distro on that model. My experience with Thinkpads is good with linux.

If you are going to try one of the buntus, 10.04 is out. Go with the latest release. Mandriva is a good choice also. I like its intaller and the tools for configuring better than Ubnutu. I run them both, I have 10.04 on my HP Mini netbook, and Mandriva on my desktop system.

The specs you listed shouldn't be any problem at all. Wireless cards can be a challenge. You didn't say which one you have.
