Yeah I should've checked the md5 sums before putting it in the USB, but I thought that the DVDs were problematic. I have them for many years.

Anyway problem is solved, after some boots in safe mode, it booted normally, without me doing anything.

The "burned at slow speed" was about the best part of the deal. Should have tested download iso by md5 or shal before you burned it but then you caught up and tested it later.
Then you ran off the tracks. You started at the cd boot and it failed. You should have never went to the usb live installs. Those two that you did were actually the exact same as booting from a cd. Those live cd's installs just took the exact data from the cd and put it on a usb. They would fail if the cd failed.

You blew right past the booted in safe mode works deal, that was a good thing to try. That is where you should have worked on getting the failing safe mode option to reveal the issue. Safe mode puts a bunch of command line options to the boot to stop things. Half splitting them or one at a time selecting them would have led you to the problem.
I have a little experience with Linux. However, even though my computer can boot from USB, it was having problems booting so I used a live CD with the same version as what was on my USB and it worked. It seems as if the USB and CD installs are a little different per computer.

There are more than a few issues with a usb flash drive being able to boot. One is the support in the distro. Two is the support in the bios and three is the way the usb is made or can be changed to be viewed by bios.

In the traditional way, cd's were around way before usb. No one would have thought to add in support. Same goes for bios. The cd was not an original part to the bios. It had to be extended to allow booting from cd and then again to allow usb's of some type.
