X won't start if I enable 3D acceleration in YaST2, this is with the default radeon driver that comes with SuSE 9.0. I've previously had RedHat 9.0 and Mandrake 9.1 installed on this laptop.. and 3D acceleration (GLX, DRI) worked without any problems. What can I do to solve this problem? I guess the radeon driver that shipped with SuSE 9.0 doesn't support M7 propely. Any suggestions?
Originally posted by darkfame That selection is not available in YaST2 (only ATI Radeon 7500), but if I remember correctly.. I used the radeon driver under RH9 and MDK9.1 as well.
Maybe SuSE 9.0 ships with a different version of the radeon driver?
Don't know, but check the laptops site, there is a lot of information.
Not completely, but at least it got the driver working. Still having a problem with libraries. I think I found the fix for that as well and will post if it works properly.
I have a Radeon 9500 Pro that is a GREAT video card, but getting full 3D acceleration support under SuSE 8.2 Pro has been the most painful experience I have faced in Linux. Learning a lot in the process.
I didn't dare to try that driver, as M7 wasn't listed. It seems like SuSE distros in general have a problem with ATI & 3D acceleration. It works flawlessly in other distros.
But there are so many other benefits with SuSE 9.0 that I can live without 3D acceleration atm.

You might find some help in getting your system fully operational. I used the info from that particular thread and got my system 99% functional. I then went to the SuSE website (posted earlier) and found the missing instruction:
switch2xf86_glx (I executed this command after completing all other steps from the thread)
Now my system is flying! It might not fix your problems, but worth a try!
Hey dark are you still haveing this issue? I have the same card suse 9.0 diffrent laptop. I went for the ghusto and tried using the radeon 7500 card driver and shazaam it worked great. I also can use 3d acceleration. If you didn't try do so and see if it works
I haven't had time to try it yet. But if it worked for your Radeon 7500, it gotta work for mine too. Did your X previously deadlock when you tried to start X with 3D acceleration enabled?
Hi I am running SuSE 9 on a DELL insprion 4150, w/ the ATI mobility 7500 (or M7) card. initially it loaded it as i believe ATI Radeon LW. Fonts were extremely tiny and not very clear. Also 3D did not work, at least through SAX2. so I picked the ATI Radeon 7500 card under the options, and it works a lot better for me. Although when i enable 3d in SAX2 , it takes it but then when you go back into the preferences it shows it as disbaled.
I think i found some command line option to check and see if 3d is actually enabled or not. but honestly as you mentioned earlier this is not a huge priority for me as i am not a real gamer, and the other benefits of running Suse are more important for me compared to my experiences with mandrake 9.1/9.2, fedora core1. (personal opinion).
I got first mandrake 9.1 9.2 recently I tried Fedora but I didn't like (it's a matter of taste sometime) and now suse 9.0 on dell inspiron 4150.
Mandrake on the graphic card (radeon lw -> radeon 7500) worked fine.
Suse gave me a problem...
It would not activate the 3d accel. well the this came out clear using 3Ddiag (type at prompt 3Ddiag) it does a bunch of analysis and told me to switch color depth to activate 3D accel (load "dri")
once I did that suse tools (yast etc..) actually activate the thing regularly instead of faking it as they did before.
