ATI Mobility X300 on Samsung R50

Okay, I admit, this is a really Linux Friendly laptop. Everything just worked out of the box. The onlything is, is that I haven't got 3d enabled.

Yast installs the Meta Drivers and I installed the ATI drivers, but as far as I know there is still no opengl support. 180 frames in glxgears isn't really a thrill.

Does someone have a clue how to configure the X300 in Suse 10? Suse 10 has a really souped upp sax2 if you have a graphics adapter it doesn't recognize ok.

If you need more info, then please tell me.

ATI makes there own LINUX drivers

Download the *.run file from the ati website. It has a rpm for suse with instructions on how to install it.

Yeah I know. Did all that and it didn't work. Fiddled a bit around, edited xorg.conf by hand....didn't work.

Then I stumbbled upon this:
1 - verify that my xorg.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.con states that the driver for the card is fglrx
2 - Add /usr/lib/fglrx/lib at the beginning of /etc/ld.so.conf and run ldconfig, to force ATI’s library to be used.
3 - (re)compile the kernel module by doing the following as root: ./fglrx-kernel-build.sh, and then doing a modprobe fglrx

Didn't work.

Then in my last desperate act before giving up, I removed the ati driver using Yast and reinstalled the RPM. Rebooted and....
it works.
