I've dual-booted my ASUS X553S with Xubuntu 16.04.3 and have a couple of strange, but possibly related issues.
1) WiFi works OK, but if I disconnect and reconnect to my router, the wireless manager shows it as disconnected, even though it is in fact connected again.
2) <deleted>
2) This is a weird one - Software installs finish with an error, but turn out to have succeeded.
I speculate that these issues may all be related in some way, possibly to do with network drivers. Has anyone else encountered these or similar issues?
All advice appreciated. NB I have edited out any reference to Bluetooth problems.
I would not think that 1 & 2 are related. Software installs are a thing on their own, and that failing is an apt-get issue, surely; maybe a permissions thing?
Network is a NetworkManager issue - it's not picking up a dropped connection. As networkmanager is one of those things I love to hate, I can't help you there.
If you suspect they are related, it may be a python issue or something, if they're both using python.
If you're not wedded to Xubuntu, Slackware is not controlled by an automagic installer like apt-get, and you can go around networkmanager
Post some errors from the logs if you can find them. We can't do much without them.
There were a number of things which didn't seem to work properly, which puzzled me, since an online upgrade on another laptop produced a perfect 16.04 system. So I decided to download afresh and re-install in the same / partition, retaining my /home partition.
Everything now seems to be working fine, so I can only suppose that my original download/DVD burn was faulty. I'll mark this thread as solved.
