adapter for hdd to floppy/dvd slot

My old laptops will only accept booting from onboard main hdd or from floppy/cd/dvd slot, so I'd like to know if anyone has heard of an adapter that will plug into one of these slots with two rows of about 30 pins each of very thin connectors and at other end have a usb or other type (ide/pata or sata) connection. As I know my problem isn't unique, and this seems like a very quick & easy fix, I thought some company may have come out with one. Any leads appreciated.

GoBooks with 2.5 inch HDDs.

I have never heard of anything that would go from IDE directly to USB. You also need to keep in mind that a lot of laptop hardware is proprietary to that brand and sometimes even model. The HDD would be a standard connector, but the connectors for the floppy and optical drives could very well be something that is exclusive to that manufacturer (especially if they are removable/swapable devices).

Check out plop. It is capable of booting from a USB device without the need/help of the BIOS. http://www.plop.at/en/home.html

plop

Thank you michaelk, that "plop" is a great discovery, both for booting and as a very useful OS in itself.
