Acer Aspire One - Sound not working Intel Atom N270, Ubuntu 8.10

Ubuntu 8.10

Sound was working when I first booted windows. Installed Ubuntu 8.10 using unetbootin. I can't seem to get sound working at all. PCM volume is up, nothing is muted in alsamixer. I recompiled alsa-driver, lib, and utils.. no good results. I'm currently running alsa 1.0.19

I am seeing this in dmesg:
HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
[ 20.875069] HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: setting latency timer to 64

---------------------------------

in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base, I appended this as the last line:
options snd-hda-intel model=auto (tried model=acer too)

I then found another tip that said to use model=acer-aspire in modprobe.d/options instead.. still no joy.

Other folks seem to be getting sound to work out of the box on this notebook. I can't figure out what I am missing. Any tips? I can't think of what else to poke.

I also tried running alsaconfig as root, checked alsamixer, turned everything up.

What am I missing here? I'm missing something.

Okay I ended up loading Jaunty using the netbook remix image (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UNR) and this was MUCH easier. Sound works and the wireless networking worked out of the box.

I am extremely impressed at the cost and performance of this setup.

The external mic isn't working yet but that seems to be a universal flaw at this point.
