Well.. I'm hoping for some help here on my end. I just recently bought an Acer Aspire One with Linpus Linux Lite v1.0.3.E and I'm having quite a hassle with it overall seeing as how I have virtually no idea about linux or even know how to code anything in general.

So I'm just hoping to get some help with it...

The main thing I'm currently having issue with is installing extra programs onto it. I'm in the process of trying to install VLC Player, but I'm having like no luck with that. Overall I seem to understand all the things it came with, but installing programs that havent been installed on it is where I'm having the trouble.

I'm also curious if anyone has any suggestions on any other useful programs that I should get for the new Acer Aspire One that it doesnt already come preinstalled.

I did try installing VLC player on it by using the "Fedora 9" download, but it didnt seem to install properly or something?

I'm not familar with that linux version, but do you see some type of Program Manager, such as, Synaptic Package Manager or similar? It would be in the System or Tools area of the top or bottom menu area.

No I do not see anything like that... Then again I'm not exactly sure where I'm looking.. What I did was Settings>System

Look somewhere like Applications or Add/Remove area. Another thing you may can find someone on the forums who has same netbook and send a PM asking them how to install programs.

Just a thought.

I'm pretty competent when it comes to Windows OS, it's just that I've never dealt with any kind of Linux OS.

And since this is a Linux Netbook/Laptop forum kinda thing, I figured I'd try here rather than randomly picking someone.

A complete guess on my part since I've never used Linpus, but from some screenshots, it looks like there is some sort of package manager in the Settings tab. That might be the place to look.

From what I've seen from googling, Linpus appears to be a rather different distro from anything else out there (even though it is based on Fedora). And maybe not in a good way. If it is driving you nuts, you might consider dumping it and going with something more mainstream like one of the *buntus.

Well... I've seen some screen shots where VLC was used on the Acer Aspire One... So I know it's possible. The main problem is, I dont know anything about Linux in general, so I dont even have a background to go off of. I've read some stuff about rmb or somthing like that, and I have no idea what that is...

I have an Aspire One. It's a brilliant machine. I had xp on it, but i formatted, and after 3 different versions of linux, i settled for ubuntu 8.10. Linpus lite doesn't have 1/4 of the functions of ubuntu, and ubuntu 8.10 functions, acts and works the closest to any windows machine... just 5 times better. you should get urself a copy of it and install it... on the aspire one, i installed it without a single driver issue.

I suspect you read about RPM, which is the software package system that Fedora (and presumably Linpus) uses. The basic idea in Linux is that software comes in packages that can be added and removed using an administrator tool. The Add/Remove Software tool in Windows is the closest thing, but even that falls far short of what the package managers in Linux can do. From what I've read, Linpus uses the Synaptic package manager that Ubuntu uses, and I think it is where I pointed you earlier. thinkthinkIf you open that up, you should be able to see what software you've already got installed and (hopefully) what other software is available to be installed.

The version of Linpus on the AAO IS based on Fedora 8, and, as such has a number of outdated libraries. However, you can get a fully working XFCE desktop with just a little tweaking. It does not use Synaptic, but yum. You must enable the RPM Fusion repos to get the best software. But in all other respects, in operates like any other release of Fedora, just a little outdated (it has the 2.6.23 kernel.) You would do well to join the AAO forum which is very active now:

I have an Aspire as well, my Linpus had no X and no gcc, I simply got rid of it...
I think you should start with something like Fedora if you do not know anything about linux, it will be easier for you...

Of course you can install rpm + synaptic, yet i think it is too much trouble with it...

How would I go about installing a different version of linux? I'm not interested in much, I'm really just wanting to know how to get VLC on the Acer right now. That's my main thing. I dont need anything else, just the VLC player

well, then i suppose you download source code (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-sources.html), and install it from the sources, of course some may agree that you should install it with some package manager, but if you only need this one, then it will be the easiest way...

Go to the forum I have shown above and search for RPM Fusion repository. There will be posts on how to set it up. Then, you can install VLC right from Linpus itself. No need to install from source.

As mentioned, http://aspireoneuser.com/ is a great resource for the One. Check out http://wiki.debian.org/DebianAcerOne for an alternate Linux distro designed especially for this netbook. If/when I decide to scrap Linpus, that's the one I'll use.
