Acer Aspire 6920G: Kernel Panic has disabled sound and caused weird boot messages...

Dear all,

(using Linux Mint - latest release - fully updated)

This afternoon I had a kernel panic at approx 6pm, I rebooted the machine and it appeared to hang before grub loaded.

I hard rebooted again, and it asked me which kernel to load, I chose the normal kernel and everything appeared to work, until I tried loading music.

I went to Menu > Preferences > Sound. I pressed Test and got the following feedback:

Code:
audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Failed to connect stream: Invalid argument
In this window, the option to select a Device is greyed out, and no device is selected.

I tried running alsaconf, it showed my soundcard as an option, but after finishing, no mixers or programs could access my soundcard.

I tried rebooting, then the system hung again, but I left it for a while, and it came up with the following:

Code:
859.932163] CIFS VFS: Error connecting to IPv4 socket. Aborting.
cifs_mount failed w/ return code = -110
859.954919] CIFS VFS: Error connecting to IPv4 socket. Aborting.
cifs_mount failed w/ return code = -512
Then continued loading. Sound still has not returned.

I do not use CIFS at all, but I do have some smbfs mounts in my /etc/fstab.

I have tried reinstalling ALSA, and installing OSS, all to little avail, would appreciate any comments/suggestions.

Someone must have some idea.

When I run Alsaconf I get the following in the console:

vesuro@insidious-dreams ~ $ sudo alsaconf
[sudo] password for vesuro:
Building card database..

Running update-modules...

************************************************************************
*
* The update-modules command is deprecated and should not be used!
*
************************************************************************

Setting default volumes...
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory
Saving the mixer setup used for this in /etc/asound.state.
/usr/sbin/alsactl: save_state:1502: No soundcards found...

===============================================================================

Now ALSA is ready to use.
For adjustment of volumes, use your favorite mixer.

Have a lot of fun!

vesuro@insidious-dreams ~ $ alsamixer

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

--

However, when it asks me to choose a soundcard, mine is listed and it acts like it's working??
