Unhappy Boot failure: kernel panic, busybox messages

I *tried* to upgrade from mandrake 8.2 to 9.1 this morning. The install seemed to go ok but the system now fails to boot.

System: dell dimension 4500
512M RAM

Messages:
(a slew of these - scroll off the screen)
busybox: unresolved symbol journal_clear_err_R3f14a6d
busybox: unresolved symbol get_empty_inode_R1a26e4eb
....
busybox: unresolved symbol journal_dirty_data_R18bcbeda
ERROR: /bin/insmod exited abnormally!
mount: error 19 mounting ext3 flags Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing in init= option to kernel

1) what is this telling me?
2) is there anything I can do to save this system?

I can get into the filesystem using a 'rescue disk' and things *appear* to be ok. What has happened?

i think this is because busybox needs to be compiled with LDFLAGS=-static. if you recompile & reinstall busybox, you should be ok...

TY - turns out the whole install was f-d up. I had to (re)build initrd via a rescue install and then recreate lilo.conf to match. Was a real pain. Silly me for upgrading.

TY for your reply.
