Hi there, Im a newbie to linux and trying to get FC4 working on my Aspire Laptop. I've used been looking through the amazing guide by doube located on doube.net for the Acer Aspire 3023. However, Im having trouble updating my Kernel so that I can activate my WiFi.

I of course start out with the standard FC4 Kernel : 2.6.11, but want to update to the latest .17. I've tried updating via Yum however upon rebooting and getting past the boot sequence (where u can hit 'I' for interactive) as soon as it hits the GUI I get an empty black screen, a 'X' cursor and the HDD activity cuts out...

Noticing from Doube's doc and talking to him he updated his machine to 2.6.13 first before hitting 2.6.17

I have tried it on the factory default BIOS and the newest one too.

Could it be a problem with Kudzu? As this is why FC5 is apparently a pain to get working on this Laptop?

Have you reconfigured your X settings? My guess is that you updated the kernel which "depended" upon Xorg7 so that was installed too (Or maybe you just also installed Xorg7).

When you get that screen, hit Ctrl + Alt + F1 to get to a terminal, and (as root) issue "xorgconfig".


Please note that I have never used Fedora Core (Anything) - I have NO idea what software comes with the distribution, or what / where those things are. Take this advice with a grain of salt.
