2.6 kernel for hp laptop

Hi, i'm trying to install gentoo. can someone help me configure a kernel for my laptop. i partitioned my drive the following way:
/dev/sda5 - /boot, ext3
/dev/sda7 - /, ext3

i also have windows xp on /dev/sda1 and grub works great. the problem is when loading the kernel.
first i used genkernel, when i put all those lines in grub.conf and rebooted it gave me an error at boot time about /dev/sda7 not beeing real root, i searched and found that i had to put scsi support into the kernel, so i tried once more manually configuring and compiling, but some similar error happened, it couldn't mount root.
what should i compile inside a kernel, as a module, and what modules to load? someone help me to configure my kernel (gentoo-sources), i have following specs on my laptop:

Centrino Duo T2050
Processor x86 Family 6 Model 14 Stepping 8 GenuineIntel ~1596 Mhz

Make sure enable support not as modules but * when you do make menuconfig. That will add support directly into the kernel. Genkernel uses an initrd image to load those modules. Here is mine but for a ati based motherboard with sata.
Code:
#
# Serial ATA (prod) and Parallel ATA (experimental) drivers
#
CONFIG_ATA=y
# CONFIG_ATA_NONSTANDARD is not set
CONFIG_SATA_AHCI=y
# CONFIG_SATA_SVW is not set
CONFIG_ATA_PIIX=y
CONFIG_SATA_MV=y
CONFIG_SATA_NV=y
# CONFIG_PDC_ADMA is not set
# CONFIG_SATA_QSTOR is not set
# CONFIG_SATA_PROMISE is not set
# CONFIG_SATA_SX4 is not set
CONFIG_SATA_SIL=y
CONFIG_SATA_SIL24=y
# CONFIG_SATA_SIS is not set

# CONFIG_SATA_VITESSE is not set
CONFIG_SATA_INTEL_COMBINED=y
# CONFIG_PATA_ALI is not set
# CONFIG_PATA_AMD is not set
# CONFIG_PATA_ARTOP is not set
CONFIG_PATA_ATIIXP=y
# CONFIG_PATA_CMD64X is not set
# CONFIG_PATA_CS5520 is not set
# CONFIG_PATA_CS5530 is not set
# CONFIG_PATA_CYPRESS is not set
# CONFIG_PATA_EFAR is not set
CONFIG_ATA_GENERIC=y
# CONFIG_PATA_HPT366 is not set
# CONFIG_PATA_HPT37X is not set
# CONFIG_PATA_HPT3X2N is not set
# CONFIG_PATA_HPT3X3 is not set
# CONFIG_PATA_IT821X is not set
# CONFIG_PATA_JMICRON is not set
# CONFIG_PATA_TRIFLEX is not set
CONFIG_PATA_MARVELL=y
CONFIG_PATA_MPIIX=y
CONFIG_PATA_OLDPIIX=y
# CONFIG_PATA_NETCELL is not set
CONFIG_PATA_NS87410=y
CONFIG_PATA_OPTI=y
CONFIG_PATA_OPTIDMA=y
# CONFIG_PATA_PCMCIA is not set
# CONFIG_PATA_PDC_OLD is not set
# CONFIG_PATA_RADISYS is not set
# CONFIG_PATA_RZ1000 is not set
# CONFIG_PATA_SC1200 is not set

# CONFIG_PATA_SIL680 is not set
# CONFIG_PATA_SIS is not set

In this .config file support that says y is when you do menuconfig it is *
